Three surveyors (cum data processors) were trained and supervised to operate QINSy and QLOUD. The mission was to survey an area of 16km by 4km with 90m water depth, existing platforms, live pipelines and a number of subsea wellheads.

MV VoyagerMV Voyager was mobilized in Singapore on 1st May 2008 with QINSy (and QLOUD), C-Nav GcGPS, RESON Seabat 8101 Multibeam Echosounder, DMS2-05 motion sensor, Applied Acoustic Sparker, GeoAcoustic Geopulse 4×4 pinger, Edgetech 4200-FS SideScan Sonar system, Seaspy Magnetometer, CODA DA2000, Sonardyne Ranger-Pro USBL System, Meridien Gyro Compass and Valeport MIDAS Sound Velocity Profiler.
This job was lead by Dr Nikolay Nenov, a well known geophysicist. The rest of the survey team were, surveyors Antony, Ihwan and Ariff; survey engineers Edy and Yaya; geophysicists Misrin and Irin (the lady graduated in geology studies) and last but not least the ICT specialist Nick Kasli, whom without the survey networking and regular data backing-up will be left unattended.
QINSy was NOT ONLY utilized to acquire all positioning, multibeam echosounding data and magnetometer data BUT ALSO was configured to output serial data to CODA DA2000. After sound refraction and tide correction being applied to the acquired multibeam data, QINSy was used to validate the data quality. Data outside the specified quality criteria will be disabled from further processing, especially during QLOUD cleaning process.

Successful ! MultiBeam Survey with QINSY + QLOUD Operations Workshop
21-23 February 2008, THE MINES Resort City, Kuala Lumpur : 19 participants have completed a 3-day QINSy+QLOUD+Multibeam Operations Workshop in Kuala Lumpur from 21st until 23rd February 2008 organised by SAFA GEOSCIENCE and QPS BV. It was in conjunction with ATOSSE2008, from 18th until 20th February 2008. The workshop was held at The Palace Beach and Spa Hotel. Participants were from various background, organisations and countries.

The Trainers and the ParticipantsQINSy trainer, FRANS NIJSEN, was assigned by QPS BV to conduct the workshop, and assisted by EDDY JUNAIDY of SAFA GEOSCIENCE Malaysia.

Each of the participants was given a notebook installed with QINSy and QLOUD software provided by QPS.The first day they were taught the importance of correct set-up and configuration within QINSy that will be used to acquire the multibeam survey data. The concept of "Do it right the first time" was emphasized.

The second day was the day they were divided into three groups. Each group was given the opportunity to experience the multibeam survey operations on a 'survey boat' mobilised with QINSy, Kongsberg EM3002, Meridian Gyrocompass, TSS motion sensor and Veripos DGPS. This system was sponsored by MAJU GEOHYDRO Malaysia. The 'survey boat' was provided by The MINES CRUISE MANAGEMENT. With the setup, seven participants can board at one time.
During this second day, the workshop managed to survey the whole North lake and confirmed the deepest point of the lake is about 95m (312 feet). Multibeam calibration (patch test) and QLOUD were taught on the last day in the classroom. They experience the calibration process using some examples provided and cleaning the multibeam data using QLOUD.

The 'survey boat' mobilised with EM3002 transducer mounted over the bow.

QINSy Training for UiTM Staffs

Ten academic staffs (five Assoc. Professors and five survey technicians) from University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia and two academic staffs from National Institute of Land and Survey (INSTUN) attended this 4-day familiarisation training in Port Dickson from 26 July until 29 July 2008. UiTM just purchased new sets of hydrographic survey system from local equipment supplier appointed by the university. Two licenses of QINSy Survey was supplied by SAFA Geoscience Malaysia that inclusive of a 4-day QINSy familiarisation program, interfacing the rest of the equipment (PDL Radio telemetry, Valeport 740 tide gauge, Odom Echotrac SBES, Trimble DSM, KVH Digital Compass) into QINSy with no difficulty. We managed to have the system tested on a small wooden boat locally hired in Port Dickson and performed small survey nearby an existing SBM owned by Shell Refinery Port Dickson.

At the end of the training program, each of the participants was be able to appreciate and understand the basic application of bathymetric surveying using QINSy. Further training session was requested for some advance applications such as offshore construction and laying, multibeam surveying and vessel tracking using QINSy software (and QLOUD too as they will purchase QLOUD in the near future together with their newly acquired multibeam system).
